Applied Behavior Analysis
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the scientific study of behavior and learning. Grounded in decades of research, ABA examines how behavior is influenced by the environment and uses evidence-based strategies to teach meaningful skills, increase independence, and improve quality of life. The science of behavior analysis has its roots in the early 20th century through the work of psychologists such as Ivan Pavlov, Edward Thorndike, John B. Watson, and most notably B. F. Skinner, whose research on operant conditioning demonstrated how consequences influence future behavior. During the 1960s, Dr. Ole Ivar Lovaas and other pioneers applied these behavioral principles to teaching children with autism, leading to the development of structured interventions that dramatically expanded opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. Since then, the field has evolved significantly, placing increasing emphasis on compassionate, individualized, and socially meaningful practices that prioritize dignity, assent, collaboration, and quality of life.
Today, ABA is recognized as one of the most thoroughly researched and evidence-based approaches for teaching new skills and addressing behavior challenges. Thousands of peer-reviewed studies have demonstrated its effectiveness across a wide range of ages, abilities, and settings. While ABA is most commonly associated with supporting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, its principles extend far beyond autism and are used wherever learning, behavior, and performance matter.
Behavior analysis is applied in homes, schools, clinics, workplaces, hospitals, residential programs, universities, sports psychology, organizational leadership, employee training, safety programs, public health initiatives, animal training, and rehabilitation settings.
